I have been tying since 1967 and find these to be a great addition to my arsenal of tying tools. They are the most comfortable scissors that I have ever used to keep constantly in my hand and the fine points are just right for the size flies that I tie - size 14-22.Quality Price Value
As a tying instructor, I have already shown them and recommended them to the students in my tying class.

I have been tying since 1967 and these are very comfortable to keep in your hand and the fine points are perfect for the size flies that I tie - nothing larger than 14 and usually 16-22. (Posted on 2/4/12)Quality Price Value - Wonderful Review by Fly Tying Bob

I learned to tie with my scissors in hand. The 6th Finger scissors are great, providing me the same convenience of scissors in hand with a slimmer profile and quality blades. (Posted on 2/3/12)Price Value Quality - Neat tool for most situations. Review by jim

Having tied for some 65 years, I have used several pairs of scissors, settling for a couple that I have had in use for 40 or more years. This addition is novel in use since it can stay "handy" while rummaging through materials for the next recipe item. I tie for personal use, and do some small stuff for fresh water trout, and larger stuff for salt water red fish; some of the s/w stuff requires a more sturdy tool, but that is not a problem. I would recommend it to folks wanting the convenience of having it in place most of the time. (Posted on 2/2/12)Quality Price Value - Good place to start Review by RickMcfly

If you have not learned to keep your scissors in your hand when you are fly tying, these scissors are a great place to start. They are nicely designed and fit well in the hand and are slightly less bulky the standard scissors. Using the scissors does require the use of all the finger in a squeezing motion rather then the thumb and one finger with conventional scissors. To me it is a bit more awkward, but overall they get my vote, especially for those who are new to the game. I appreciate the convenience of these scissors. I tie with my scissors in my hand and the sixth finger allows me to tie without thinking about shifting the scissors. They are sharp, easy to use in tight places and always there. (Posted on 12/10/11)Quality Price Value - Still getting comfortable with 6th finger scissors! Review by Richard, Oxford, Ohio

I like these a lot. They are precise, sharp, and will manufactured. I still have a habit of putting them down after a cut instead of keeping them on my hand. I am sure with more use I will use them as intended. Excellent product! (Posted on 11/2/11)Price Value Quality - A very usefull product ! Review by Graham

I found the 6th finger scissors to be extremely sharp with a very small sharp point which is fine for close delicate work. Since I don't hold my scissors in my hand while tying, it got some getting use to, but when I did, the were so unobtrusive that I forgot I was holding them. Very nice. The Sixth Finger Fly Tying Scissors have made my tying so much easier. I had several pairs of scissors and was always hunting for them....even if I put them down in the same place on my desk. I can comfortably hold these scissors and forget I have them in hand at times. Sharp as a razor and easy to use. I am extremely pleased with the purchase and am buying some for gifts this Christmas. Well made. (Posted on 10/12/11)Price Value Quality - 6 th finger sissors Review by Greg

I ordered a pair of the standard 6th finger scissors in the march . They came in a few days. When my Girl friend saw them she wanted to borrow them to give them a try. It is a good thing since then I have been spending my free time on the water. As fall approaches and I sit back down at the bench I'll have to get another pair as the original are usually busy in the palm of you know who.Price Value Quality
Light sharp and after you get use to them in your palm they save slot of time.

I got these scissors about 6 weeks ago, but have only started using them in the last 2 weeks or so. At first I wasn't that impressed with them, but as I began using them I started appreciating them more and more. They have tremendously sharp tips which allow me to trim fine fibres very closely.Quality Price Value
I initially found the scissors getting in the way when I whip finished ( by hand), but I was wearing the scissors on the middle finger. I have recently switched to the ring finger, and now have no conflicts with this operation.
These scissors have replaced some Iris scissors I originally obtained from a veterinarian friend some 30 years ago. These have been dropped on concrete loors a few times and have been sharpened a couple of times. The tips are somewhat mangled but are still pretty sharp, although they don't work as well in close as they used to. Ths prompted the purchase of the 6th finger scissors.
I am happy to say that after an initial period where of getting used to them, these scissors now exceed all my expectations, and perform admirably. Also they're a lot harder to drop, since they rarely leave my hand, so they should last a long, long time.

I have been tying for 25 years and have never been able to comfortably hold scissors while tying. This design has solved the problem. As soon as I used the scissors I was amazed how natural they felt in the hand without interfering with ones tying style. I have yet to use another scissor. Once adjusted to that it is a major improvement to have the scissors ready anytime. Great tool for me. I am left handed, but was taught right handed (from looking at pictures and listening to instructions) so my hands tend to both get a workout. This forces me to cut with the bobbin hand. It took a few flies to get it down (a held materials back and cut with the left hand while tying with the right) and have greatly improved my tying effectivness.Price Value Quality
I love the small sharp scissor blades too. Being it winter I have been tying many midge patterns for local trout and these have helped a few of the problems I had in the past! (Posted on 1/21/11) - Don't leave home without them Review by KevinP

The scissors eliminate flipping the scissors to the back of my hand, and back to my palm when tying flies. If you need really fine points to trim hackle and threads, and are used to holding the scissors in your hand while you tie, these fit the bill. The only caveat is that they are a bit longer than a usual scissors so you have to get used to the additional length when you tie. Fine points are ideal for those tiny flies. These scissors stay out of the way when you are tying. They are very sharp and cut close. I would not advise using them to cut anything but soft items but I can pick up another pair of more heavy duty scissors and use them with the 6th finger still in my hand. Try 'em, you'll like 'em. Got my scissors this morning in the mail. Took time out from work to try them. Absolutely love the scissors. I use the larger size on my streamers and the smaller ones on the drys and size 18 - 26. Feel good in the hand and not in the way during tying. I am going to recommend these every chance I get. Definitely worth the wait. Tying for 22 years and finally a pair of scissors that are perfect. The 6th finger tying scissors are a great addition to my fly tying station. They do not help me with being out of my way however because of the size of my fingers. The size of the finger hole is simply too small to flop back and forth for using in the manner described in the sales proposition. But for my finger size they are excellent scissors and have been an asset to my tying in getting into the smallest sections of tying areas to clip even the smallest feathers or thread. One of the guys at our club was tying with them and let me try them. Phenomenal. No learning curve and no adjustment needed, just slip them over your finger and they fit like an old friend.

I have a vise vice (22 and counting...I can quit anytime, really) and an equally dangerous scissor fetish ( too many to count). Although I have been tying for over 45 years, I have never gotten comfortable tying with wearing scissors continously. A professional I met recently told me he learned by forcing himself to wear a scossors on his hand all day long...I didn't have the guts to ask him if he ran with them too.Price Value Quality
In my mind, that's over the top and more than I was willing to do to look like a pro. Along comes the 6th Finger and, problem solved! A quality surgical steel, fine point scissors that literally becomes a natural extention of your hand. I actually believe the 6th Finger has ended my quest for the ultimate fly tying scissors.

Hatches is pleased to announce the arrival of Singlebarbed’s Sixth Finger Scissors to the Hatches Store! These surgical-grade stainless steel fly tying scissors are designed to remain in the hand for the duration of the tying session. One over-sized finger hole allows the scissor to be worn like a wedding ring at the base of the finger and keeps the points away from your work- and them precious eyeballs.
Absent that big metal second finger hole – your hand can flex naturally while positioning materials in preparation for them to be secured to the hook shank. So long as the hand is tilted upward the scissors remain out of the way.
Once the materials are secured with thread just tilt the hand downward and the scissors will fall into the “cut” position. The overly large finger hole allows the scissor more motion on the finger than traditional tying tools – and accommodates larger hands – so chafing is at a minimum.
All that remains is to press your thumb against the spring loaded scissor and the cut is made. Tilt the hand and the “Sixth Finger” falls back into the holstered position.
Having tied flies for some time, using a wide range of scissors along the way – from four dollar specials to surgeon’s scissors- Hatches Staff have been quite pleased with these scissors. Having the scissors at the ready cut around 15-30 seconds from each flies tying time– compared to regular scissors– and if you’re not used to holding the scissors in your hand you should save at least a minute or two versus hunting for them in the debris at the vise base.
These are fine point – light duty; no cutting of bead chain or prying open tuna cans, heavy work is best left to larger shear-style scissors. These will cover the bulk of your cutting and should provide great service. They will not tire your hand or chafe the ring finger.
You can always tell a pro tyer from an amateur by whether or not they put their scissors down or keep them in their hand after use. A pro tyer never puts his/her scissors down, instead they leave them in their hand so they’re always at the ready, allowing them to tie faster. While some scissors which are designed to be held at all times have been on the market for some time, they are often bulky, restricting the tyer’s hand from performing the basic tasks associated with fly tying. The Sixth Finger Scissors are unique as the small diameter ring allows your fingers to have a full range of motion while tying. They’re also incredibly easy to operate. Simply close your hand to make a cut, using the thumb to press on the spring-loaded handle. These are light scissors with fine points and a finger hole designed to fit both big, hammy hands, or smaller paws. 4.5” inches long and made of surgical stainless steel with faux gold handles, these will work for both left and right-handed tiers. How to Use the Sixth Finger Scissor Most will find it completely intuitive as the scissor shape and gravity dictates most of the motion. Three basic positions are used to “holster” or cut with the points. Depending on the size of your fingers most will find the holster position somewhere behind the knuckle and the base of the finger.
Absent that big metal second finger hole – your hand can flex naturally while positioning materials in preparation for them to be secured to the hook shank. So long as the hand is tilted upward the scissors remain out of the way.
